CLSA MEETINGS

The CLSA typically holds two meetings throughout the year: our annual conference, which includes our annual general meeting, and our mid-year meeting, usually held mid-winter. Our meetings provide participants opportunities to present their work, network, and engage with scholars working within the interdisciplinary field of law and society. We especially welcome participation from graduate students and provide financial support to assist with travel and accommodation costs.

Below you will find information on both.

Conference support is offered for CLSA  members!

CLSA members may apply for financial support from the Association for conferences, symposia and workshops that contribute to socio-legal scholarship in Canada. Events must be sponsored by CLSA members, must be held in Canada, and must be likely to attract at least twenty attendees. We are particularly in favour of events held in parts of the country not recently served by either an annual or midwinter meeting of the CLSA or some other CLSA-sponsored event. Ideally, sponsored conferences, symposia and workshops will also be likely to provide CLSA graduate student members with opportunities to present their research and make connections with more senior scholars.

We anticipate making two or three awards of between $300 and $600 per year. In their applications, applicants should describe the event’s contribution to socio-legal scholarship, the expected participants, the applicant’s relationship to the CLSA, and how the CLSA’s support will be publicized. Applicants should specify how many CLSA members are expected to attend. Any involvement of graduate students should be specifically noted. Applications for funding will be considered in March and October of each year; accordingly, the funding deadlines are March 1 and October 1.

CLSA Meetings Code of Conduct

Our conference Code of  Conduct outlines how we aim to ensure our conferences are inclusive, open, and constructive environments: All attendees, speakers, and volunteers at CLSA conferences are expected to agree with the following code of conduct to help ensure a welcoming and educational environment for everybody. Our conferences are dedicated to providing a positive, knowledge-building experience for everyone regardless of gender identity, sexuality, age, ability, race, ethnicity, religion, or career stage.

Challenging or difficult questions are the lifeblood of academic inquiry. It is our expectation that they be delivered with respect and decorum that is due to academic colleagues at all career stages. Harassment and/or aggressive or offensive verbal comments directed to other participants, sustained disruption of CLSA talks or events, and inappropriate physical contact in any form are inconsistent with our goals in coming together and are not acceptable. We ask participants to follow these guidelines at all CLSA conference and conference-related social events.
